Teeth Fillings

Teeth Fillings are one of the most common dental procedures used to restore teeth damaged by cavities, cracks, or minor wear. When a tooth develops decay, the dentist removes the decayed portion and cleans the affected area. The empty space is then filled with a special material to restore the tooth’s shape, strength, and function.

Several types of filling materials are available, including composite resin, amalgam, ceramic, gold, and glass ionomer. Composite fillings are tooth-colored and blend naturally with surrounding teeth, making them ideal for visible areas. Amalgam fillings, made from a mix of metals, are durable and suitable for back teeth where chewing pressure is greater. Ceramic and gold fillings are long-lasting and resistant to staining, though they can be more expensive.

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and takes less than an hour per tooth. After cleaning out the cavity, the dentist layers and hardens the filling material using a special light. Properly done fillings prevent bacteria from entering the tooth and help maintain oral health.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups, is essential to extend the life of fillings and prevent new decay from forming around them.
